If you're thinking about becoming a coach, keep in mind that there are different types of coaching businesses you can start. You need to determine which suits you best, and which the area in which you can specialize is. Coaches usually focus on family, business, career, relationships, social skills, or a finding a balance between the professional and the personal life. Each of these areas has specific approaches and challenges, and each can bring great rewards and satisfactions.
The personal coaching will focus on the personal life of the client, to help recognize the lifelong goals and dreams, and to identify the areas that need improvement or must be eliminated in order to get a general sense of improvement. A good coach does not come up with solutions. As a coach, you will need to ask the right questions and guide the client into discovering the correct answers. The relation between coach and client is based on communication, trust and commitment. The client must feel it is safe to open up and grow for accomplishing the full potential. The coach will help the client come up with new, innovative and experimental solutions for dealing with the problems. Also, the client will learn how to set practical, achievable goals, and work towards achieving them. There are many cases when the clients get frustrated or tired. It's the job of the coach to keep them focused, to create new solutions and ideas, and to make them see what they have already accomplished and how close they are to the big breakthrough. The main purpose of a coach for the client's personal life is to provide the client with the right motivations and to help them achieve a sense of balance and fulfillment. There is also a type of business coaching, to help a client achieve success and accomplishments in the business world. Again, this does not mean finding business solutions for the client. The business coaching is all about helping the client find the energy and the confidence to deal with the problems alone. A specialized type of business coaching is the management coaching. This helps new managers understand their responsibilities and guide them through the steps involved in their new positions. Very often new managers are competent in their line of business, but have problems communicating with those around them, or are unable to set the priorities or to delegate responsibilities. Leadership coaching is similar to management coaching, but less business-oriented. The coach will help the new leader understand the importance of the position, the responsibilities and the options and opportunities involved. In some cases, the coach will help the leader understand and cope with the pressure involved; in other cases, it will be a communication problem between the leaders and the ones being led. Career coaching, pretty self-explanatory, helps people develop their careers, by identifying the steps to be taken from a moment on, or by helping them make a shift in their career. Sometimes people are not sure if they've chosen the right track for them, in other instances, they feel stuck and don't know where to move on, or they just want a change and are not sure how to make the most of their skills and abilities. In all these types of coaching business, the satisfaction comes from seeing the clients develop and achieve their goals. A coach is satisfied with the work done when the clients is pleased as well.
